When Carbon Dioxide expands and becomes too large for a certain container, where does it go? Now, we will see by blowing up a balloon without your breath! J
What you need:
- 4 Tbsp vinegar
- 2 tsp baking soda
- A clean, empty plastic bottle (approximately 16-17 FlOz.)
- A balloon
- a Partner
- Small funnel
What
to do
What Happened?
- Put 2 teaspoons of the baking soda in the bottle using the funnel
- Have your partner ready with the balloon, to stretch over the opening of the bottle.
- Pour the vinegar quickly into the bottle, using the funnel. Hold the bottle with the other hand.
- Stretch the balloon’s opening over the bottle, as fast as possible.
- Watch it expand!
What Happened?
- The baking soda and vinegar create carbon dioxide when they mix
- There is not enough room in the bottle
- So the Carbon Dioxide expands into the
balloon
- Now the balloon blows up
